Post Office Event Center

1931

Located at the corner of 5th Street and Macon Avenue in the Downtown Historic District, the Cañon City Post Office is an architectural gem from 1931. The Post Office showcases a rare architectural design by James A. Wetmore and is a beautiful example of the Italian Renaissance Revival with elements of the Beaux Arts style. The exterior of the building is gray with sand-finished terra cotta tile, Indiana limestone, a Spanish clay tile roof, tall arches and original windows. The interior retains a high level of integrity with original features like terrazzo and marble floorings, millwork, an original letterbox and original light fixtures. The building is rectangular and is highly symmetrical with its primary elevation facing southeast toward Macon Avenue. This building is in excellent condition and was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 under Criterion C for Architecture. The Cañon City Post Office is the current home for the Fremont Center for the Arts.
